Location Ludlow Castle is a ruined medieval fortification located in the town of Ludlow, within the English county of Shropshire. It dates back to shortly after the Norman conquest of England and is believed to have been founded by Walter de Lacy. As one of the first stone castles built in England, Ludlow stands on a promontory, overlooking the River Teme. Its architecture is reflective of its long history, blending several styles of building from different eras. There are the remains of two 13th century gatehouses, with portcullises still intact, as well as the ruins of a circular keep – an inner stronghold – which is unique to this castle. There is also evidence of alterations made to the castle during the 15th century when it was owned by Richard, Earl of March. In addition, there have been recent excavations of an area that is thought to be evidence of a medieval kitchen garden.
Attractions Ludlow is a small and vibrant town located in beautiful countryside and steeped in history. With its historic castle, fine dining and plenty of independent stores, it has become a popular destination for tourists. There are butchers, bakeries, delicatessens, clothes shops, ironmongers, gift shops, book shops, antique and craft stores scattered around the town. Furthermore, the markets which occur every day other than Tuesday offer a wide variety of local produce, crafts and more. Ludlow provides a number of good walks through charming countryside with nine circular routes starting from the town centre and Mortimer forest just a stone’s throw from the Manor House.
